Chapter Six
When Phil went back to his house, he confronted Lula Carson in his living room watching television with John and Henry. Apparently, Brian hadn't returned from work yet.
"It's been a day," she said. "Can I get you a beer?"
"That would be great," he said, accepting kisses from Henry and an especially wet one with tongue from John.
When Lula had left the room, John snuggled closer to Phil. "Any time you want to drop myoid man in favor of a younger stud, I'm your boy."
"Cut the shit," Phil said. "I don't want to hear you talk like that again."
Looking sullen, John rejoined Henry on the sofa to watch more television.
Going back into the kitchen, Phil was just in time to accept a cold beer from Lula who had also decided to have one for herself. "Arlie Rae Minton-I'm sure you remember him, he's unforgettable-came by on a mission. He slipped upstairs and caught John and Henry going at it. I think Arlie Rae jacked off during the session, then came over and threatened to have all of us arrested for corrupting the morals of a minor."
"From what little I know of Arlie Rae, that sounds typical. Any serious threat here?"
"Not at all. The crank is probably home beating his tiny meat surrounded by pictures of that hound dog between pukes, Linda Tripp."
"She's a trip all right. So is Arlie Rae."
Lula sipped her beer. "Every time I've been over here the phone has been ringing. Jerry Wheeler. Terry Drummond. Lavender Morgan. Danny Hansford. That black drag queen bitch, Tango. I slammed down the phone on her. Gin Tucker. It seems all of Savannah wants to get cast in your movie."
"That's good, I guess. I mean to have so much interest."
"Even the mayor called. He said that after Clint Eastwood came down here and made the entire city look like a cesspool of filth and perversion, he was glad to learn that a film crew would be descending to portray Savannah in its true light."
"My God, he hasn't read Butterflies in Heat, has he?"
"Surely not. He is aware of the title, though, and wants you to retitle the film-Savannah, a Great City of the Old South. "
"Real catchy title," he said sarcastically going out to their shared patio, hoping to catch any breeze that might be stirring.
Lula trailed him. "There's more. I'm not going to let you off so easily. When you leave me in charge of your household, expect fun and adventure at every turn."
"Surely the Arlie Rae episode was enough for one day. Jason's got into more trouble?"
"Jason is sleeping for the moment. He's come back to me filled with remorse and guilt. He says he will never betray me with another woman ever again."
"If Tango can be called a woman. I note he left out betray you with another man."
"He did that deliberately and conveniently, I'm sure. But Jason isn't the only one who can attract prospective bedfellows of the same sex. Only this afternoon I received an offer to indulge in fornication myself.
